In a concerted effort to expand upon its ever-growing Cinematic Universe, Marvel has been meticulously releasing a series of short films with the home video releases of its major features. These so-called "one-shots" typically focus on supporting or peripheral characters in their own adventures and serve to round out the shared universe's overall continuity. The first two installments of this experimental storytelling starred Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson: The Consultant was bundled with Thor, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer was included with Captain America: The First Avenger. The third short, Item 47, came packaged with The Avengers and starred Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford as a couple who discover an alien weapon in the aftermath of that movie's epic New York battle.
Agent Carter, Marvel's fourth one-shot, stars Hayley Atwell reprising her Captain America role of Peggy Carter, and takes place about one year after Steve Rogers crashes in the Arctic. The short film, which will be included with the Blu-ray release of Iron Man 3, also features Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, and Bradley Whitford.
