LAURA ANN KESLING on 'BEDTIME STORIES'
Interview by Michael J. Lee, Executive Editor for RadioFree.com
March 24, 2009
Arguably his most family-friendly movie, Bedtime Stories stars Adam Sandler as Skeeter Bronson, a handyman who tries to save the hotel his father once owned, finding the confidence to challenge a conniving manager after he unlocks a whole universe of imagination through telling stories to his young niece and nephew. This light-hearted fairy tale adventure also features a delightful ensemble, including Keri Russell, Courteney Cox, Russell Brand, Guy Pearce, Teresa Palmer, and Lucy Lawless.
We've always heard about the fun, laid-back atmosphere on an Adam Sandler set, but it's not often we get the perspective from the child stars. In this exclusive interview, Laura Ann Kesling, who plays Skeeter's niece Bobbi, talks about the experience of making this family comedy and being part of the Disney empire--which included the perk of attending Miley Cyrus' much publicized 16th birthday bash at Disneyland.
Bedtime Stories is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

The Interview

RadioFree.com: It looks like you had a lot of fun working on Bedtime Stories. What was your favorite part about making it?
LAURA: I guess everything, you know? I liked being on set, and I liked going there a lot, and I was sad when I was done, and that was it for the movie. I didn't really want to be done, you know, because I had so much fun on set.
What was your favorite scene to do?
My favorite scene would be the [ancient Rome] scenes. I always liked [them] because they did my hair nice, and I liked what I was wearing in that, and I liked the gold thing that went around my head. And in the scene, Russell Brand would always [joke around]. That was kind of weird, but it was fun, too. And you'll see that on the DVD because there will be bonus features of me talking about that. It'll be funny.
How did you like filming the DVD and Blu-Ray extras? Was it weird to re-visit the movie?
Well, it was actually while we were doing the Napa Valley scenes we had to do the interview, and you'll see that the castle will be behind us. But it was fun remembering the movie and doing all that stuff.
Did you get to hang out with your co-stars and have fun with them between scenes?
Yeah, I had fun with Keri [Russell]. She had a little son who would always visit and we'd play with him, and he was like a little baby, so we'd always mess around with him. And it was fun working with Adam and his dog and doing all that stuff.
How was Adam's dog involved?
He had a little bulldog there, and inbetween takes when we had like a long break and we were done with school, we'd always like to watch over Babu, and we'd always like to hold him and do stuff like that.

Do you perform in plays at your school?
No, we don't have any plays.
So how did you get into acting?
Well, I just saw people on TV that were little, and I would keep on saying "I want to do that" to my mom. She finally got me into one of these acting schools, and I got a manager, and that's how I got started!
You've said that you watch Disney Channel a lot. What are some of your favorite shows?
I like Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Who are your favorite actors?
I like Brenda Song, I like Selena Gomez, and I like Miley Cyrus, and I like Dylan and Cole Sprouse.
Since Bedtime Stories is a Disney movie, have you had the chance to meet them at Disney events?
No, not really. I mean, I went to [Miley Cyrus'] birthday party at Disneyland where she invited a lot of people. I didn't get to meet her, but I got to see her. And I got to see Dylan and Cole Sprouse, I got to see Demi Lovato, I got to see the people from Camp Rock. People like that I saw at her birthday.
That was her giant 16th birthday party where they closed down Disneyland?
Yes.
What was that like? You probably didn't have to stand in lines for rides...
They actually didn't let us go on any rides. Everything was closed down...She had like a little concert, and there was like 7,000 people--not 5,000, it was like 7,000! [laughs]
Have you seen any other movies recently that you've really enjoyed?
Well, I saw Race to Witch Mountain with Dwayne Johnson. I'd like to do a movie with him one day, so I liked that movie a lot!
Thanks for taking the time to speak to us today.
Thank you.
