A sexy action adventure. John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie) are an ordinary suburban couple with an ordinary, lifeless suburban marriage. But each of them has a secret: they are legendary assassins working for competing organizations. When the truth comes out, John and Jane end up in each other's cross-hairs.

Our Take
|
Commentary by Andrew Manning (June 2005)
This quick review is going to sound even more superficial than usual, but that's okay, since Mr. and Mrs. Smith is nothing if not superficial. It's all about the eye candy, folks, and this action adventure boils down to two things: stuff blowing up and Angelina Jolie looking unreasonably hot.
The "stuff blowing up" element manifests itself as a nearly non-stop spree of discharging firearms. When the title characters go at each other, they unload a seemingly Matrix-level of bullets in the process, laying waste to just about everything in their path. A subsequent high-speed car chase involving a vehicular four-way is equally loaded with Hollywood carnage.
The "Angelina Jolie looking unreasonably hot" element alternates between her being the sexy, resourceful head of an all-female superspy agency and her being the slinky, undercover vixen who uses all the charms at her disposal to get the job done. The highlight scene is our heroine pouring herself into a tight, black dominatrix outfit and seducing her mark right before killing him--so what starts off as a bondage flick with Angelina as the top suddenly turns into a snuff film starring Angelina as the snuffer. And that's hot. And you know damned well it is.
Vince Vaughn brings his standard brand of comedy to the mix, rounding out the story and making Mr. and Mrs. Smith entertaining fare overall. Those looking for a fun, inconsequential summer blockbuster should check it out, while hardcore fans of Angelina Jolie should check it out twice.
