Warner Bros. has officially made two major announcements regarding the future of the Batman feature film franchise: the sequel to last year's blockbuster hit Batman Begins will be entitled The Dark Knight, and Heath Ledger will join the cast to take on the coveted role of The Joker.
Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman, and Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman are attached to return as Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox, and James Gordon, respectively.
Director Christopher Nolan will be back at the helm, and is optimistic about the newest member of the starring cast: "I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins," the Oscar-nominated filmmaker commented. "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."
Production on The Dark Knight is set to begin early in 2007, and the film is expected to hit theaters in 2008.
