Although it never got the high-profile buzz of Heroes, The 4400 spun a compelling storyline of people with inexplicable powers and mysterious pasts for four seasons--a storyline that, some critics would argue, exceeds that of the NBC primetime hit. The 4400 originally launched as a 5-week mini-series with a simple, intriguing premise: in the blink of an eye, 4,400 missing persons suddenly reappear without knowledge of where they have been, some with haunting, superhuman abilities. As the world is thrown into a frenzy at the bizarre phenomenon, the returnees are forced to figure out what exactly happened to them. The mini-series was so well-received that it followed up its initial debut with three seasons with about a dozen episodes each. Now, the entire run is available in a fantastic 15-disc box set!
Here's a breakdown of what fans can expect from The 4400: The Complete Series...
- All the episodes of the series, including the landmark pilot and a director's cut of the series finale.
- In-depth commentary from cast and crew (including producer/writers Craig Sweeney and Ira Steven Behr) on select episodes.
- An assortment of behind-the-scenes bonuses, including the following: a documentary about the creation of the show; season overviews with cast interviews; interviews with the scientific community discussing aspects of the series such as time travel; a featurette on transitioning from a completed mini-series to an open-ended weekly series; featurettes on the characters' special powers and the visual effects of the series; an examination of Billy Campbell's enigmatic character Jordan Collier; and gag reels.
- An interactive character tree for Season 3 in which highlight footage is accompanied by narrative from a given actor about their character.
- Deleted scenes from Season 4, including some good stuff from Summer Glau (Firefly, The Sarah Connor Chronicles).
- A bonus disc that is exclusive to the Complete Series box set, loaded with behind-the-scenes material, including roughly thirty minutes of deleted scenes from the first three seasons, more in-depth commentary about the origin of the show and its eventual cancellation, and promo spots for the show's fictional drug Promicin.
Hardcore fans of the series will find the new bonus disc worth their time, and may find themselves compelled to trade in their individual seasons of The 4400 for the complete box set. Meanwhile, newcomers to the show will be in for a treat as they discover some of the most compelling serialized sci-fi in recent years.
