It may be hard for Gen X'ers to believe, but do the math and you'll see that it's true: February 20, 2008 would mark the 41st birthday of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. It seems like just yesterday that the band's breakthrough album Nevermind was hitting the scene and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was defining alternative and modern rock radio. Since then, the song has been called the anthem of a generation, and Cobain has been made into the de facto icon of Generation X and the grunge movement.
In the documentary Kurt Cobain: About a Son, filmmaker AJ Schnack puts together an intimate portrait of the reluctant rock legend by intertwining interviews with newly filmed material depicting the three Washington state cities that played major roles in Cobain's life: Seattle, Olympia, and his hometown of Aberdeen, where a memorial sign greets visitors with the lyric-laced message, "Welcome to Aberdeen - Come As You Are."
About a Son sees Cobain recounting his own life in his own words, from childhood to unexpected stardom, based on over 25 hours of previously unheard audio interviews conducted by music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. The film features the music of a myriad of artists who influenced Cobain, including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Creedance Clearwater Revival, and R.E.M. An original score is composed by Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk.
